The Age of Aquarius

I am not an Astrologer or Astronomer, though both subjects do capture my interest. Therefore, I have often wondered about the Age of Aquarius (a subject of seeming interest to both Astronomers and Astrologers). It’s been talked about for as long as I can remember. There was even a very popular “60s” song written about it. But when exactly is The Aquarian Age supposed to arrive? Turns out, no one really seems to know the day, the hour, even the year. There are some clues about what its arrival will bring and what kind of manifestations we will see, so I did some research. Though there are volumes of opinions and data, the following is a nutshell of what I discovered. It is my own summation of what I found.

A common theory expressed by many astrologers is that the Age of Aquarius is a time when humanity takes back control of the earth as well as our own destiny, our rightful heritage. That destiny is spoken of as being the time of the revelation of truths and the expansion of human mental and spiritual enlightenment.

Again, no one seems to know when the Aquarian Age actually begins but one theory suggests that the Age of Aquarius will not arrive on some future given date but is instead already emerging as an influence similar to the tides of the oceans that surge forward incrementally rather than all at once.

The “Age of Aquarius” is an astrological term that describes an astronomical event that will affect all life on earth. This is determined by the relation of the Earth, Sun and constellations of the zodiac that will lead to major and benevolent world changes.

According to one Scottish author, the “second coming” prophesied by many religions, will come in the feminine form of Maitreya, “The World Teacher.” In part, it is expected that, for the next 2,500 years or so, we will be absorbing the cosmic energy of Aquarius, which will transform all life on the planet by drawing together, fusing, and blending, contrary to the energy of Pisces, which has separated and divided the world.

It is indeed a new age that we are entering astronomically. So, this is not solely an astrological event but has to do with the relationship now being formed in the cosmos between our Solar System and the constellation of Aquarius. This process will go forward and, gradually, humanity will begin to understand the reality of its spiritual nature.

As we enter the New Age, everything changes. Political; economic; religious and social foundations, beginning an inevitable renovation under the impact of the new, powerful, cosmic energies that are already entering our lives. The foretold destruction, the author believes, is altogether exaggerated. Countries will not disappear beneath the oceans, nor will the oceans rise as mountains. Some philosophers believe that the cataclysm which has been foretold by so many is emanating from the astral planes (suggested by classical, medieval, oriental, and esoteric philosophies and mystery religions, or the planes of illusion — Wikipedia) and has little foundation as an actual fact. Change there will be but change for the better.

The Age of Aquarius is seen as a time of the breaking of barriers; of new interactions, innovation, and disruption towards a better world. This will cause chaos, yet these happenings hold promise for a welcomed world of peace where humankind will live in harmony with nature.

According to my research, Aquarius is already bringing a considerable shift of consciousness. The Great Epoch appears to have begun. Because the spirit understanding is linked with the “Mother of the World,” the approach of this great Epoch is important and will substantially change even physical life on the earth. Even though in the beginning the changes will be harsh and hard to endure, they will stimulate new elements that are so needed for the forward motion of growth and the advancement of our planet and those who call it home. Birth and/or evolution is a very messy thing, and new “rays” are reaching the earth for the first time since its formation.

As well, today appears to be the beginning of the feminine reawakening. These new rays will penetrate deeply and, though startling, deeply emotional, even alarming, it is invigorating to feel the approach of this New Age.

Agni Yoga, the yoga of fiery energy, justifies that the evolution of the planetary consciousness, though dynamic, is an attainable aspiration for mankind. It teaches that the stronger the thunder, the more powerful the lightning. The New Age arrives in storm and lightning and for lightning to happen, positive and negative energies are needed.

The Mother of the World appears as a symbol of the feminine, to which the masculine will voluntarily return the treasure of the world, as depicted by the astrological symbol of Aquarius. The Amazons (a tribe of warrior women believed to have lived in Asia Minor.) were the embodiment of the strength of the feminine principle, and now is the time to display the aspect of the spiritual distinction of woman.

The generation which will come into active thought expression at the end of this age will install the framework and fabric of the Aquarian Age which will be the Age of group interplay, group idealism, and group consciousness, just as the Piscean Age has been one of personality emphasis, personality focus, and personality consciousness. Selfishness, as we now understand it, will gradually disappear, for the will of the individual will voluntarily be blended into the group will.

Alice Bailey, a writer of more than twenty-four books on theosophy, was one of the first writers to use the term New Age in her writing of “From Bethlehem to Calvary,” where she penned (and I paraphrase):

|It would be of value here to remember that the condition of humanity at this time is not the result of simply one factor, but of several — all of them being active simultaneously, because this period marks the close of one age and the inauguration of the new. The ancient symbol for the sign of Aquarius (into which our sun is now entering) is that of the Water Carrier, i.e. the man with a pitcher of water, signifying the passing of the sun into the sign of Aquarius, which is an astronomical fact, not an astrological prognostication. The great spiritual achievement and evolutionary event of that age will be the communion and human relationships established among all peoples, enabling men everywhere to sit down together and share the bread and wine (symbols of nourishment).

Preparations for that shared feast (symbolically speaking) are on their way, and those preparations are being made by the masses of men themselves, as they fight and struggle and legislate for the economic sustenance of their nations and, as the theme of food occupies the attention of legislators everywhere. This sharing, beginning on the physical plane, will prove equally true of all human relations and will be the great gift of the Aquarian Age to humanity

Astronomically, we are not yet functioning fully within the influence of Aquarius; we are only just emerging from the Piscean influence, and the full impact of the energies which Aquarius will set loose has not yet been completely felt. Nevertheless, each year carries us closer to the heart of power, the major effect of which will be to induce recognition of man’s essential unity, of the processes of sharing and of cooperation.

As we enter this New Age, everything changes. Eco, political, religious and social structures, will inevitably modify and adjust under the impact of the new and powerful, cosmic energies that enter our lives. The foretold destruction, I believe, is altogether exaggerated. The cataclysm which has been foretold by so many, emanating from the astral planes — the planes of illusion — has little foundation in fact. Change there will be but change for the better.

The Age of Aquarius is a time of transformation; a time of the breaking of barriers; of new interactions, innovation and disruption towards a better world.

Helena Roerich, a Russian theosophist, writer, and public figure in the early 20th century created, in cooperation with the “Teachers of the East,” a philosophic teaching of Living Ethics (“Agni Yoga”). She wrote the following, in “Letters II,” (24 August 1936):

“The New Epoch is marked by the sign of Aquarius, and its ruler is Uranus. The affirmation of the power of the rays of Uranus always coincides with new trends in the whole life of our planet. It is also significant that the co-ruler with Uranus is Saturn, the symbol of the dark forces. All great epochs were marked by these two opposites, by this struggle of the forces of Light with the forces of Darkness. The tension of one side correspondingly intensifies the opposite side. It will bring the renaissance of woman.”

It is remarkable to observe the rapid rise of the women in India. Women are occupying the posts of ministers and other responsible positions. Many women of India are excellent speakers. The Indians readily elect women, because they have faith in the common sense of their wives. Neither age nor country of origin seems to fall behind in the influx of the feminine who are taking their place on the stage of this renaissance, as demonstrated by sixteen-year-old Greta Thunberg of Sweden. Her actions and homage to our planet is a noteworthy indication of changing times, of the beginning of the Age of Aquarius. But, of course, there are also opponents of the liberation of women and our planet.

So, this research has answered some of my questions, as well as spawning even more questions. There does seem to be a “birth” taking place; the racking pain; the confusion; the apprehension and the anticipation that accompanies the labor of a mother and the delivery of a new child/entity are upon us. I find it of interest that in order for the transition or the birth of the New Age to take place, opposite forces must first be present, as when a new human life is created in the womb.

As delightful as the song “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine in” is (by “The Fifth Dimension”), it is evident that changes are happening, and it is obvious that more are yet to come upon this planet. Though they will be mind boggling, soul charging, and fortitude challenging, they will no doubt promulgate the importance of aligning oneself with the positive and dynamic forces that surround us.

Are we up to the challenges that await us? Are we ready? Because it appears that these times are upon us — ready or not!
